Aryan worked for a well-known film and he had a loving and caring family. Aryan’s parents considered themselves to be the luckiest, to be blessed with such a wonderful child. But on the other hand, Aryan was not happy with himself, since he thought himself to be an ugly, unconfident and unattractive person.

One evening, while returning home from work, he, along with many people, was waiting for the bus. On arrival of the bus, Aryan somehow made his way into the bus and managed to find a seat.

After sitting, he looked around the bus and noticed a handsome and charming man sitting opposite him. On looking towards the man, Aryan became sad once again regarding his looks and personality. All types of bad thoughts started coming in his mind that he was not worth this beautiful world. He thought that lucky man, with such a beautiful and attractive face, must always be the center of attraction.

Aryan became jealous of that man and could not bear him in front of him. So he changed his seat to avoid him. On the way all the negative feelings kept coming to his mind, imagining how his life would have been only if he were more handsome and good looking.

Finally on reaching the destination he came out of the bus. As he was walking, a person suddenly pushed Aryan from back. Aryan angrily turned around and what he saw brought tears in Aryan’s eyes.

The same “fortunate” man he had been envying all his way had difficulty in walking, since his one leg was shorter than the other. The “fortunate” man apologized to Aryan, but Aryan couldn’t say a word and walked away with tears in his eyes and guilt in his heart.

The ministry of education recently published national standards for the management of primary and secondary schools. It says that schools and parents should work together to ensure primary school students sleep at least 10 hours a day and middle school students sleep nine hours a day.

However, we interviewed some students’ parents and none of our interviewees said they could achieve that goal. And none of the interviewees believed other parents would be able to achieve that goal.

This has to do with the academic burden on children. Many kids have ridiculous amounts of homework to do each night, while they also suffer from the additional burden of after-school courses. The truth is that children have to work harder than adults.

It should be noted that many parents are rather tired with this situation, and they complain about being exhausted by helping their children with homework and feel pressured by the economic burden of after-school courses.

Doubtlessly, the main course lies in the competition in society. No parents want their children to fall behind

第页

5

in the race.

The problem is especially serious in many cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, where there are both quality education resources and fierce competition. It is difficult for children in these cities to sleep enough hours every day.

In order to change this, education resources need to be more fairly equal, especially for primary education, so that students and their parents do not have to compete so fiercely for the limited amount of quality education resources.

Such things are always easier said than done, of course. To balance primary and secondary education resources will be a difficult process. But only by doing so will our children get enough sleep every day. 28. What is the purpose of the national standards mentioned in Paragraph 1? A. To make sure students have enough sleep.

B. To explain why enough sleep is important for students. C. To find out why students can’t have enough sleep. D. To state how the national standards are carried out. 29. Which fact does mainly lead to students’ lack of sleep? A. Learning stress.

B. Economical pressure from extra courses. C. Fierce social competition. D. Low efficiency in study.

30. According to the author, the government should ________. A. reduce the learning courses. B. provide equal education resources. C. strengthen financial support. D. publish strict education policy.

31. Which one can BEST describe the structure of the passage? A. Compare and contrast. C. Reason and solution.

B. Cause and effect. D. Opinion and suggestion.

There is a lot of talk about “brain power.” You don’t usually hear about stomach power. As it turns out, the stomach might also be very powerful with a new electronic pill inside it. The new electronic pill, equipped with a Wi-Fi transmitter, is swallowed and can harvest energy from inside a person’s own stomach to record core(核心)

body temperature and then send the health data to an outside monitor.

The model can power itself for nearly a week—much longer than current absorbable devices, which are placed inside the body and only can share health information for less than an hour. “To make the device work even longer, and see if the stomach’s acid could power the device, we used tiny pieces of copper and zinc for experiments.” said Philip Nadeau, an electrical engineer who designed the device together.

The Wi-Fi devices fit inside a capsule but unfold when they hit the stomach and deliver drugs for long periods of time before they break down and pass through the body. This Wi-Fi pill could lead to fresh opportunities for drug delivery or real-time health monitoring from inside organs, said Giovanni Traverso, a doctor and biomedical engineer at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, who c0-led a study of the pill published recently in Nature Biomedical Engineering.

Despite our many medical advances, we’re pretty bad at measuring core body temperature. A recent study of 8,600 patients found that thermometer(温度计)readings from the mouth or skin did a lousy job of measuring core temperature. Getting an accurate temperature is important.

Traverso and Nadeau are also aiming to shrink(缩小)the pill to the size of a tablet. “Temperature tracking is just the first of many ways the medical community can use the device.” Traverse thinks. 32. What is WRONG about the Wi-Fi pill? A. The Wi-Fi device is powered by itself. B. The pill can send health data to the doctor. C. Nadeau is the first one to design the pill. D. The pill can help monitor patients’ health.

33. What does the underlined word “lousy” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Accurate.

B. Unimportant.

C. Terrible.

D. Traditional.

34. What is the Traverso’s attitude to the future of the Wi-Fi pill? A. Pessimistic.

B. Unconcerned.

C. Worried.

D. Optimistic.

35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. The Wi-Fi pill is too big for the patients to swallow. B. The pill may help those with other diseases in the future. C. Body temperature is the only one use for the Wi-Fi pill. D. The pill has been used in many ways in medical field. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Never Forget Why YOU started

At the 19th National Congress of the CPC 61 ended last month, “Never forget why you started” was a key message. And that same message 62 (apply) to everyone’s life.

Ambitious, meaning things you want to achieve very much, play 63 important role in our daily life. When I was a student, my father told me that his ambition since his childhood was to be a translator. He wanted to work inside big buildings as a white-collar worker. With his strong ambition in mind, he was determined 64 (work) hard at every subject, 65 (particular) English, and as a result, he 66 (admit) to the best university in his province. Afterwards, he came to Shanghai for a job. There was one thing he regretted: he didn’t get a job as a translator but became a teacher instead. This story gave birth to my ambition and it “told” me to realize this dream.

With time 67 (go) by, some people forget their ambitions. How can you keep your ambitions alive? First of all, writing down your ambition is a good way to remind you. Second, take action to stay closer to your ambition. For example, I have to memorize English words to 68 (large) my vocabulary. I also try to speak English as much as I can so that I can communicate with 69 (foreign) freely.
