I’m sure you know the song “Happy Birthday”. But do you know who wrote the song and for whom it was written? The retired professor, Archibald A. Hill in Lucasville, USA could tell us the story. Ninety-seven years ago, two of Mr.

Archibald Hill’s aunts, Miss Patty Hill and Miss Mildred Hill were asked to write some songs for a book called “Song Storied for the Sunday Morning”. Miss Patty Hill and Miss Mildred Hill were both kindergarten teachers then. They loved children

very much and wrote many beautiful songs for the book. One of them was the famous “Good Morning to You.” The song said, “Good morning to you, good morning to you, dear children, good morning to all.” This song was very popular at that time among kindergarten children. But not many grown-ups knew it. A few years later little Archibald was born. As his aunt, Miss Patty Hill sang the song “Happy Birthday” to the melody(曲调)of “Good Morning to you” to her little nephew(侄子). She sang the song like this: Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday, dear Archie! Happy birthday to you!

The world is not hungry, but it is thirsty. It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the earth is covered with water while we say we are short of water. Why? Because about 97% of water on the earth is sea water

which we can't drink or use for watering plants directly. Man can only drink and use the 3% - the fresh water that comes from rivers and lakes. And we can't even use all of that, because some of it has been polluted.

Now more water is needed. The problem is: Can we avoid a serious water shortage(缺少) later on? First, we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out the ways to reuse it. Scientists have always been making studies in the field. Today, in most large cities water is used only once and then runs to the sea or rivers. But it can be used again. Even if every large city reused its water, still there would not be enough. What should people do next?

The sea seems to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the sea. All that needs to be done is to get the salt out of the sea water. This is expensive, but it's already used in many parts of the world. The most important to avoid a serious water shortage is to find a cheaper way of getting the salt out of the sea water. Scientists are trying to do it. So you see, if we can find a way out, we'll be in no danger of drying up.

36. The world is thirsty because ________. A. 3/4 of the earth is covered with water B. we have enough sea water to use directly

C. we haven't used all the water in rivers and lakes

D. about 97% of water on the earth can't be drunk or used for watering plants directly

37. ________________ of fresh water on the earth is in rivers and lakes. A. 3% B. 75% C. 97% D. 25% 38. From the passage we learn _________.

A. if every city reuses its water, we'll be in no danger of drying up

B. man can only drink and use about 25% of water on the earth C. today in most large cities water is used only once D. water can be used only once

39. To avoid the serious water shortage, which of the following is the most important? A. Make dirty water clean and then reuse it.

B. Try to find a cheaper way to get the salt out of the sea water. C. Don't pollute water and keep all rivers and lakes clean.

D. Save water and try to make good use of the water in rivers and lakes. 40. The best title of the passage would be ________. A. How to Reuse Water B. How to Save Water C. The Thirsty World D. The Polluted Water

C

When an ant dies, other ants take it out of the nest, often within an hour after its death. This behavior interests scientists and they wonder how ants know for sure—and so soon—that another ant is dead.

One scientist recently came up with a way to

explain this ant behaviour. Dong-Hwan Choe is a biologist, a scientist who studies animals and plants. He found that ants have a chemical(化学药品) on the outside of their bodies that signals to other ants, “I'm dead—take me away” when it is dead. But there's a question to answer: As we know, if an ant is dead, it stops moving. But when an ant is sleeping or knocked unconscious, it is also not moving. However, other ants don't move the living ant out of the nest. How do they know this ant is not dead? Choe found that ants have another chemical on their bodies. The chemical tells nearby ants something like, “Wait—I'm not dead yet” when it is not dead. Choe suspects that when an ant dies, the chemical that says, “Wait I'm not dead yet” quickly goes away. When other ants detect(侦查) the “dead” chemical without the “not dead yet” chemical, they move away the body.

To test his idea, Choe and his team put different chemicals on ants. When the

scientists used the “I'm dead” chemical, other ants quickly moved the treated ant away. When the scientists used the “Wait—I'm not dead yet” chemical, other ants left the treated ant alone. Choe believes this behavior shows that the “not dead yet” chemical overrides(优先于) the “dead” chemical when picked up by other ants. And that when an ant dies, the “not dead yet” chemical disappears. Other nearby ants then detect the remaining “dead” chemical and remove the body from the nest. Understanding this behavior can help scientists find out how to stop ants from invading(侵犯) new places and causing problems. 41. What does a biologist do?

A. Study ants. B. Study chemicals. C. Study animals and plants. D Study signals. 42. When an ant dies, other ants ___________________.

A. leave it alone B. move it away C. find it out D. burn it

43. The underlined word “unconscious” in Paragraph3 probably means ____________.

A. 失去知觉的 B. 死的 C. 有意识的 D. 消失的 44. How do other ants know an ant is alive? A. The living ant tells them it is not dead. B. The living ant put a chemical on himself. C. Other ants know it by touching it.

D. The living ant tells them using a special chemical.

45 .Which of the following descriptions about Dong-Hwan Choe is right?

A. Choe did this test in order to stop ants from invading new places. B. Choe is a biologist who is only interested in animals, especially in ants. C. Choe first came up with an idea to explain this ant behavior, and then did some tests to prove it.

D. Choe did the research on this ant behavior on his own.

These days shared bikes are becoming the center of attention in my We Chat friend

circle. Many of my friends are sharing photos of themselves riding bikes, especially during the weekend in natural parks, and I can see people logging in (登录) and out of shared bike apps.

I’m very happy that there are shared bikes on the road. They have saved us a lot of time during special situations, and on beautiful, clear days, people enjoy riding them outside the city.

I tried shared bikes last week, and I didn’t like them very much. I think the first shared bikes without baskets are designed for athletes. They are very hard to ride, and the seats are not comfortable. It makes me wonder whether people really like riding shared bikes or are just saying this to agree with others.

A friend secretly told me she tried the bikes to fit in. She doesn’t like bikes and finds Beijing’s roads too hard for bike riding. But recently, the only way to hang out with her friends is riding out of town together. To join in social activities, she had to pick up bike riding again.

Another friend admitted that he started talking about and sharing photos on shared bikes to appear modern and fashionable to friends. He started paying attention when shared bikes first came into use.

These views will give me something new to think about when I ride these bikes again.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, for they believe that it is helpful for social progress and richness, others say that competition is bad; and that it sets one person against another and leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief(看法) that their self – worth came from how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, performing well and winning are often life-and-death matters. Sadly, they forget to develop many other human qualities.

However, while some seem to wish to succeed very much, others think quite the opposite. They, especially young people have suffered from competitive stress from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often find that they choose to fail. They seem to choose failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” In fact, they are worried that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean they were worth nothing.

Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove their self – worth. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self – worth come from how well one performs in comparison(比较) with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. I suggest that they can discover a new meaning in competition only when such worries and fear begin to disappear.
