How to Become Cleverer

“Of course. It is said a fish head is good for brain. If you eat one, you’ll become cleverer indeed. Pay only three pounds for one fish head.” The boy paid him three pounds and the fisherman cut off a fish head and handed it to him.

A raw fish head is not good—not even for a hungry boy to eat but the boy ate it up in two gulps.

“Do you feel anything?” asked the fisherman. “Not in my head,” said the boy.

The boy lay on the ground and thought. “One whole fish costs only two pounds. I had paid him three pounds for the fish head. If_English_means_endless_new_words,_difficult_grammar_and_sometimes_strange_pronunciation,_you_are_wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr.Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.

Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.

“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”

The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension

were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

C.the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people’s brain D.the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time

Glynis Davis,

I first piled on the pounds when I was in the family way and I couldn’t lose them afterwards. Then I joined a slimming club. My target was 140 pounds and I lost 30 pounds in six months. I felt great and people kept saying how good I looked. But Christmas came and I started to slip back into my old eating habits. I told myself I’d lose the weight at slimming classes in the new year...but it didn’t happen. Instead of losing the pounds, I put them on. I’d lost willpower(意志力)and tried to believe that the fish and chips didn’t make any difference but the scales don’t lie.

Roz Juma,

To be honest, I never weigh myself any more. I’ve learnt to be happy with myself. It seemed to me that I would feel sorry about every spoonful of tasty food that passed my lips. My idea is simple. You shouldn’t be too much thinking about food and dieting. Instead, you should get on with life and stop dreaming of a supper-thin body. This is obviously the size I’ve meant to be and, most of all, I’m happy with it.

Lesley Codwin:

I was very happy about winning Young Slimmer of the Year. I’d look in the mirror unable to believe this lady was me! That might have been my problem—perhaps from then on I didn’t pay attention to myself. Winning_a_national_competition_makes_everything_worse,_though,_because_you_feel_the_eyes_of_the_world_are_fixed_upon_you. I feel a complete failure because I’ve put on weight again.

Ros Langfod,

Before moving in with my husband Gavin, I’d always been about 110 pounds, but the pleasant housework went straight to my waist and I put on 15 pounds in a year. Very often I try to go on a diet...I’m really good for a few days, then end up having the children’s left-overs or eating happily chocolate—my weakness. I’d like to be slim, but right now my duty is the children and home. I might take more exercise when my kids are older.

( )73.What do you think the four women were all talking about?

A.Their own slimming matter. B.Their life after marriage. C.Their work as a housewife. D.Different diets they prefer. ( )74.Where are these short passages mostly likely to be taken from?

A.Talks on the radio. B.Advertisements on the wall. C.Books in a library. D.Magazines for children. ( )75.What does the underlined word “scales” possibly mean?

A.The coach in the slimming club. B.Some tools to measure weight. C.Glynis Davis’dear husband. D.The salesperson in a shop. Ⅳ.翻译(共5小题,每小题2分;共计10分)
