Ayna Agarwal is very serious when it comes to helping animals. That's why she started an international organization to help stop the overpopulation of animals. It educates communities around the world about the dangers of stray(走失的) animals living among humans.
Ayna's quest to help animals began years ago after she saw a horrible event while on vacation in India at 9. \"I was in a car with my family and I saw a little puppy on the road,\" she said. \"She had a hurt leg and a car came by and they didn't stop; they just ran over her.\" Ayna said she realized then that she had to do something to help these animals.
At first, Ayna's efforts weren't taken seriously because she was so young. She was turned away at the first shelter where she tried to volunteer.
Now, her international organization is drawing lots of attention. Ayna was recently a member at the Just Peace Summit in New York City. The summit was the work of Three Dot Dash, a global initiative of the We Are Family Foundation. She was known for her work and taught how to better use social media and the Internet to help her work.
Her biggest reward, however, has been actually making a difference. \"Knowing that one dog can produce 50,000 puppies in 10 years and that by sterilizing that one dog I saved many others is my biggest reward,\" she said. \"Also helping them find loving homes is very rewarding!\"
What does Ayna see herself doing in five years and beyond? She plans on going to college and graduate school and become a veterinarian to help further her work.
Ayna's organization, spotglobal.com, does so many things to help animals around the world but she also helps her local community by organizing things such as a dog walk-fundraiser to help with sterilizing(使不育) animals.
Ayna's number one goal is to sterilize over 50,000 animals and to establish an organization that will last a very long time to help with the problem. What is the number one favourite pet in the UK? If you think the answer is \"dog\"—you are wrong. There are 8.6 million cats and 8.3 million dogs in Britain according to recent figures. But experts predict(预测) that there will be more dogs than cats next year as dogs become more and more popular.
Dogs as accessories(配饰)
We like to spend time with our pets. The Queen is famous for her corgis(威尔士矮脚狗) and is often photographed with them. Nowadays some dog owners are more extreme—a few TV celebrities
even take their dogs shopping or to restaurants. Chihuahuas(吉娃娃犬) are especially popular as \"handbag dogs\" because they are so small.
Dog holidays
People are also giving their pets holidays. Many UK hotels and holiday parks now welcome dogs as guests. What about owners who go abroad? They can leave their pets at a dog hotel or dog spa while they are away. Some even provide their canine(犬) guests with a TV.
Dogs are for life
The British charity, Dogs Trust, finds homes for thousands of lost and homeless dogs every year. Their famous slogan \"A dog is for life and not just for Christmas\" was created in the 1970s to teach people about the responsibility of owning a dog. Dogs Trust told British people not to give dogs as gifts or treat them like toys.
Dogs on TV
Victoria Sitwell is the host of the popular TV programme called \"It's me or the dog\". In the show Victoria helps dog owners with their pets' bad behavior. She tries to find solutions to problems such as a Dalmatian who thinks he owns the house and won't let the family sit on the sofa, dogs that will only eat ice cream and biscuits and even a bulldog who uses the owner's bed as a toilet. Yuck!

When Joe Ward went fishing in Florida one day last September, he didn't need a weather report to tell him that big trouble was on the way. All he had to do was observe the behavior of the area's wildlife. “The fish were just biting like crazy, like they were storing up,” says Ward. “There wasn't a
bird anywhere, not even a gull, which is very unusual down here. And on the banks, the insects—the ants, everything—were climbing high.” The next day Hurricane Frances hit. Was this an isolated incident? Hardly. “Some people say that animals have a sixth sense. I don't know if I'd go that far,” says Wildlife Conservation Society research scientist Diana Reiss. “There's a lot we still have to learn about their behavior. But I don't think there's any question that animals can hear, feel and notice things that we can't.”
When Sri Lanka Wildlife Department deputy director, H. D. Ratnayake, surveyed the destruction left by last December's tsunami, he was shocked by what he had not seen before. Tens of thousands of humans were killed. But there was very little mortality among wildlife. At Yala National Park, the phenomenon was especially noticeable. Though the human death number nearby was more than 200, officials found no wildlife dead bodies. After the tsunami, wild tales keep surfacing. Residents have reported seeing herds of antelope(羚羊) thundering from a coastal area to the hills before the giant wall of water hit. And nesting flamingos(红鹳) left low-lying areas, heading for the safety of higher ground. How did they know trouble was on the way?Scientists credit a well-tuned sensory system. “Animals have to adapt to their environment to survive,” Reiss says. Changes in atmospheric conditions also may have played a part, some scientists say.
Wildlife photographer Mike Blair remembers the day he witnessed how waterfowl can sense change in the weather. That morning the weather was mild, with a few snow geese on the marshes at the wildlife protecting place. But as the day progressed, flight after flight of geese crossed the sky and settled on the wetlands. The next day temperatures decreased widely and a snowstorm hit. “The refuge staff said there were 20,000 geese there at the start of the day,” says Blair. “By the end of the day, they were estimating there were 300,000 or more.” Wildlife biologists believe migrating waterfowl have a built-in sense to predict the approach of large storms and are particularly responsive to changes of pressure in the air.
113. What will the antelope do before a storm? A. They will rush to the top of the hills.
B. They will go to the coastal land to store some food.
C. They will leave their home and move to another place forever. D. They will move to the wetlands to avoid the storm.
114. What's the meaning of the underlined word “credit” in the second paragraph? A. believe the animals can create.
B. guess the animals change. C. predict the animals owe. D. owe the animals' action to.
115. In Reiss's opinion, why animals can survive some disasters while humans cannot? A. Because they have a sixth sense.
B. Because they can feel the changes in atmospheric conditions. C. Because they can feel and notice something we human beings can't.
D. Because human beings are well-developed and don't need to adapt to the environment.
116. What's the main idea of the passage? A. The migration of the wildlife animals.
B. What will the waterfowl do when there is a disaster.
C. Animals have a six sense to predict the coming natural disaster.
D. The number of human beings' destruction is larger than the wild animals'.
D
Some people take lots of exercise. Others keep to strict diets. But according to recent research, the best way to live a long and happy life is simple: Get a dog.
“We have known for many years that the company of a pet can increase well-being in a number of ways,” says Dr Bonnie Beaver, an animal behaviour specialist at Texas University. “For example, the survival rates of heart attack victims with pets are much greater than those of people without pets.” According to Dr Beaver, pet owners are less likely to need a doctor. They recover more quickly when they do get ill. They have lower blood pressure, take more exercise and are more socially active. Above all, they are happier.Seventy percent of the families Dr Beaver surveyed said that their family environment was happier after they got a pet. And this is what Dr Beaver and other researchers are trying to achieve. They want to find a scientific link between human happiness and a long life. There is no final answer to this question yet, but it seems to be something to do with emotional ties. People with someone or something to love live longer. “There are many forms of animal-human relationship and some are very helpful,” says Dr Beaver. It seems that the more lovely an animal is, the more it benefits our health. As the saying goes, “if you want to be loved, get a dog.”
Pet ownership benefits men and women equally. Other life experiences divide the sexes. “Women are more sensitive to bad marriages than their husbands because they work harder at their relationships,” says Dr Janice Glaser of Ohio State University.
The message seems to be that a woman is better off with a good dog than a bad husband. Yet in some ways, men are similar to dogs. They like getting dirty and making a mess. They forget birthdays. They can disappear for days on end. How can they be better trained?
117. According to the author, the company of a pet does good to a person in the following ways except . A. having less chance of dying of heart attacks

八、短文7选5(5选5等)(共5小题;共10分)
121. It might understand more than you think. A dog named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. 122. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee. In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. 123. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words.
In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. 124. The correct object was chosen in seven out of 10 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of removing. A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive. 125. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!
A. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before.
B. Do dogs more understand us than some friends?
C. It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. D. Be careful what you say around your dog. E. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words.
F. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. G. Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog.
